With unstable oil prices and supplies, along with the public's increasing awareness of environmental issues we recognize the need for fuel efficient transportation. Small electric commuter vehicles became the most obvious choice for five reasons:
- The electrical infrastructure is already in place: the nation-wide electrical grid.
- Electric vehicles save money. Compared to a 25 mpg car, refueling our vehicle would be the equivalent of paying $0.48 per gallon of gasoline. Pricewise, it's equivalent to getting 182 mpg instead of 25 mpg. (This is assuming 4 miles/kWh and the price of electricity in the Northwest at $0.078/kWh and the price of gasoline is $3.50/gallon)
- 80% of commuters in the US drive 50 miles or less per day.
- In Oregon, there are 1.15 million people that drive alone to work each day, this accounts for 73.6% of all commutes to work. (source: BTS 2000)
- Here in the Northwest, charging an electric vehicle on the grid produces 80% less carbon dioxide than using a 30 mpg gasoline powered vehicle.
